Making Live Journal Icon 3 (Using Multiple Layers and B/W Picture)

1. What you will need is a strong, artistic, and elegant photo of celebrity in black and white. In this technique we will use no textures. Only ordinary brushes and color effects. Mine is James McAvoy. Why? Because the photo have a strong impression, deeply expression, and of course, black and white. **Tips: Using this technique, mood is a very important thing. Listen to your favorite song which have a meaningful lyrics while you're using this technique. Trust me! Every kind of song has its own impact to every work. For example, I'm listening a jazz song from Renee Olstead, "A Love That Will Last" while making this icon.

2. First, open your picture. Press CTRL+A (select all) and then, CTRL+C (copy).

3. Create a 100x100 pixel canvas board. File > New > set the size into 100x100 pixels > OK.

4. Press CTRL+V (paste).

5.  As you may see, the picture doesn't fit the canvas, so resize it. Go to Edit > Transform > Scale. And resize it. Before you resize it, activate the chain tool . Why should? So when you resize the picture it'll be still proportional.

6. After you get the desirable size to fit the canvas, press enter on the keyboard.

7. Since the photo must be unique and artistic, try to get your own composition. Mine is like below.

8. It's a little bit blurry, so we should sharpen it a little. Go to Filter > Sharpen > Smart Sharpen > set the Radius into 0.5 > OK.

9. Create a new layer. Just click at the icon second from right on the Layer Window.

10. Click on the color palette, choose this color #ac4c12. Use the paint bucket tool and paint the background. In case you can't find the paint bucket tool, look for the gradient tool , press and hold it until it change into paint bucket tool.

11. Set the Layer 2 to "Pin Light" and set the opacity to 50%.

12. Create a new layer again.

13. Click on the color palette, choose this color #3d6e8d. Use the paint bucket tool and paint the background.

14. Set the Layer 3 to "Soft Light".

15. Create a new layer again.

13. Click on the color palette, choose this color #794a7a. Use the paint bucket tool and paint the background.

14. Set the Layer 4 to "Soft Light".

15. You'll have something like this.

16. Now, go to Layer 1. Right click on it, select "Duplicate Layer" and press OK.

17. You'll have "Layer 1 Copy". Click and hold it, then bring it into the top of all layer. Set the "Layer 1 Copy" into "Saturation" and the opacity into 50%.

18. Duplicate the "Layer 1 copy". Right click on it, select "Duplicate Layer" and press OK. You'll have "Layer 1 copy 2". Set it to "Screen" and the opacity into 20%.

19. Create a new layer again.

20. Click on the color palette and choose this color #c28063.

21. Pick the brush tool . And choose the soft round 100 pixels. And brush it at the canvas anywhere you want but try to make a composition when you brushing it. According to me, it'll be good if I brush it on the center.

22. Set the layer into "Darken". You'll have something like this.

23. Now add text. Use Times New Roman in size 6.5 pt in white color (#FFFFFF). Since I listen to Renee Olstead's "A Love That Will Last", I will add phrase from the lyrics.

24. Voila! You've got this.
